Investment Funds

Investment funds carry three forms of commissions or sales charges known as "loads". A "front load" is when you pay commission up-front at the time you purchase your fund. A low load charges no fee as long as you keep a fund for two or three years depending on the fund company. A third choice is deferred sales charge where the investor pays no fee as long as you keep the fund for six to eight years. We do not recommend this third option for investors.

There are advantages and disadvantages to front loading verses low loading. Front loading is established at a set percentage of the original capital that you invest (usually 2% or less). The larger the amount invested, the less commission paid. Low loading funds assess charges if the fund is sold within the first two or three years. When possible we encourage the use of the low load alternative. Low loads offer the advantage over the front-end of loading because all of your invested capital goes to work for you immediately.. When a low load option is not offered we recommend paying a front end fee verses using the deferred sales charge option.

As investment advisors we want to maintain maximum flexibility for your investments. This is why we recommend no load or low load funds because when changes need to be made we do not want to be restricted in adjusting the investments with an exit fee.
